Canada Orders ByteDance to Cease TikTok Operations Citing National Security Concerns
The Canadian government has instructed ByteDance, the China-based owner of TikTok, to cease its business operations in the country due to national security concerns, according to a report by Reuters. However, the Canadian government has not imposed any restrictions on the use of TikTok or content creation on the platform within Canada.
In a statement, Canada’s Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne confirmed that action has been taken against TikTok Technology Canada Inc., a ByteDance entity established in Canada, due to concerns over national security.
Last year, Ottawa began an investigation into TikTok’s investments and expansion plans within Canada. Under Canadian law, foreign investments can be reviewed if they pose national security risks. However, details regarding such investment reviews cannot be disclosed publicly.
In response, TikTok has announced plans to challenge the Canadian government’s decision in court.
